Tre in Ghana

I just got word that my friend Tre Shallowhorn, who was part of my documentary program at UCLA, had all of his equipment stolen – camera, laptop, iPod, cellphone, and cash while working on a project in Accra, Ghana.

I wrote to him to pass on some of the words that some of you encouraged me with when I went through the same thing…and again thanks to those people who were there at that time. If you’d like to give Tre some encouragement, he just started a blog here (which he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to continue). I’m sure he’d appreciate any similar comments that you left for me – even though he probably doesn’t know you. Or, in your own way say a prayer / send encouragement that he’s able to recover the equipment.

Gadling

So it’s been made official: I received my introduction on Gadling – and my series will begin this week, under the title Dim Sum Dialogues.

So again, I know there’s been a lack of updates on this space, but now that my posts are rolling, I will do a better job of linking the two sources.

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway

If everyone starts copyrighting the English language, we’re going to run out of phrases pretty soon…right?

Travel Blogs

I recently had the chance to be interviewed by Eric from TravelBlogs.com. My intention was to generate questions that any possible volunteers might have. If you are one of those people, please feel free to email me.

Twitter in 3D

There’s been a lot of talk about Twitter in the mainstream media lately, but this is the most interesting way I’ve seen it used so far.

Twitter, in 3D!

Spiders in Space

Found this today. It’s from November 2008, but still interesting. I think this has the makings of a serious horror film…with Samuel L Jackson perhaps?

The Great Railway Disaster

Time Magazine: The Great Railway Distaster

This article was brought to my attention yesterday, after a reader discovered my Tazara entry. The article was written three years after the railroad was completed…amazing to think that the same problems we observed on our adventure were present only three years after it’s completion.

From the article:

The equipment was only two years old and already showed signs of neglect. Toilets that the Chinese once scrubbed meticulously were now subjected to desultory and occasional swabbings by Tanzanian and Zambian workers. The dining car was clean but cramped and hot; its $2.50 menu, passengers joked, included only two choices: chicken and rice, and rice and chicken. In second and third class, travelers swayed together, jammed six or eight to a compartment…

Superbowl XLIII

The longest play in Superbowl History: an interception that led to a 100 yard touchdown run by Pittsburgh Steeler’s #92, James Harrison. He was interviewed by NBC after the game, and treated like a hero for enduring such a momentous play. Watch the video of that play here.

And then there’s this play, by #92, James Harrison. The same hero, showing a different side. NBC didn’t even mention this play when interviewing him. So what do you think? Yes, a penalty was called, but should he have been ejected? Should this type of behavior be tolerated in the NFL? I understand that the game of football gets physical, but I think that this goes beyond any competitive contact. I think it’s disgusting that a professional player that was so prominently praised is allowed to get away with something like this.

I only hope that someone will call him out on it…

Shelfari

I was sent a link to a new social networking site today. The catch to this one, is that friends are brought together by the books that they read – to discuss books read and recommend new choices. Sounds like fun…right?

I just created an account. Add me if you do too.
