My watch reads 5:23 AM. I’m spread across a foam mattress on the concrete floor of the Children for Children’s Future center in Arusha town. A single fervent voice awakens me, whispering something about Obama… It’s the evening of the presidential election in America, and the morning of November 5th in Tanzania. My eyes are heavy. I don’t want to wake up. I stayed awake until 2:13 AM the night before, to indulge in as much mainstream media speculation as channel TBC1 would allow to take over their airtime. When it abruptly switched back to a slew of amateur Tanzanian soap operas I decided it was time to go to bed. There is a finite limit to how much swahili television a mzungu can watch. And yet as I sat there engulfed in a dark room with the lazy flicker of poorly produced television, I didn’t grasp that I was spending my last moments in the world as I had known it for 22 years.
Election Week

So I’ve heard some rumors that there’s an election coming up this week, in some far-away country called the United States of America? I’ll be taking a poll of my own this week in Arusha so you can see a preview of who would win if the election was held here. I think I already know the answer.
